cloning mech drive to SSD

Thread needs solution

I cloned my mechanical drive to a new WD SSD (thru a USB port).  The operation appeared to go without a hitch and the computer shut down.  I then removed the USB and did a restart from the old drive.  Surprisingly the Acronis interface came back up and was telling me that the path was not found for the linked drive.  I clicked to ignore and then the computer rebooted and brought me to the same window.  This time I reconnected the USB SSD and clicked yes to wait and find.  I got the same result.  I tried all possible options but I could not get the OS on the old drive to start.  I then installed the new cloned SSD and it booted just fine.  However, I cannot read the old drive when connected as a secondary nor will it boot as the master.  Windows disk manager shows the drive but indicates its protected and won't let me perform any operation.  How do I remove this lock?

Gernv, welcome to these User Forums.

Please see KB 2201: Support for OEM Versions of Acronis Products which applies to your WD version of Acronis True Image.

Next see forum topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this  which was written in response to many other users coming to these forums with very similar problems as you have described.

From the information you have provided, it sounds likely that you have performed the cloning action from within Windows which modifies the Windows Boot Configuration files during that process but this change should have been reversed when the process completed successfully.  What I cannot tell you is if the WD OEM version of ATI makes further changes to the source drive for the clone operation requiring that this drive is then removed and not used to boot in to Windows again?

If the new (cloned) drive is working correctly, then I would suggest making a full disk backup of that drive and then try restoring that to the original drive.  Note: if the drive is still shown as being locked or protected, then you may need to use other tools to force a full format or wipe of the drive before you can restore to it.
