Question regarding Backups off bootable media vs in Windows environment

Thread needs solution

I am at a point of having to restore some directories on Windows 2008 server standard. I took a backup of the volume and the file system while I was in Windows. I also took a backup of the file system from the boot media thinking it may be a better backup since all Windows services would be shut. Does it really matter?

My problem is I backed out of Windows 2008 SP2 to get around an issue with a database. Turns out it wasn't SP2, it was something else. I get an error code 8000FFFF when trying to re-apply SP2. My thinking is I will just restore the Windows directory to its state before I applied all the windows updates. Will this work or do i need to also restore the system volume foler? I know this is a Windows question but just thought i would tap every resource possible.

When you refer to the system volume folder, are you talking about the System reserved partition or the System32/WoW64 folder?

If your server is not running Exchange or databases then there is no difference between making an image from the Linux environment or Windows. Though as you say there can be no conflicts if using Linux, except that means taking your server off line.

If running databases you may find you need to either enable Windows Volume Shadow Copy service and or stop databases transactions whilst the imaging is taking place.
