Troubles understanding backing up SQL and Exchange

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

i'm not familiar with database and Exchange backup using Acronis. Maybe you guys could assit me with the following, thanks a lot in advance.

A new customer is runnning Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 (Advanced Server SBS). In the Windows Server Softwarelist (Installed Programs), all that is installed is this:

Agend Core
Agend for Windows
Management Console

The backup results in one giant .tib which i can browse by double clicking on it.

I am wondering how a valid Exchange and SQL backup is currently maintained at all. Aren't there special tasks and special agends need to be processed and installed in order to backup a SQL database or restore Exchange database or even eMails in a account? Is there a way to check if any of this is working at all?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

As of my understanding there is only one Agent (Agent for Windows) for the SBS version. Agent Core is a dependant and must be installed for other components to work correctly. Management Console allows you to manage backup/recovery plans and tasks and handling archives (TIB).

In newer versions of Acronis Backup products is a separate Agent for Exchange and SQL-Server, not in ABR11. In case of a Windows SBS it is not possible to backup or recover particular Emails, Mailboxes or SQL-Server Databases, only the whole system can be recovered at one. Except recovering folders/files which is always possible.

The backup of Exchange and SQL-Server Databases is been done application aware by utilizing VSS (docs, see notes for Win 2003 SBS if apply). Granular recovery of those was introduced in ABR11.5 along separate Backup Agents.

To verify your backup is working correctly you can recover to separate hardware (make sure you don't connect it to the network).

There is also a good documentation for Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 as well.

If you're planning to upgrade consider a clean setup of all components as a direct upgrade from ABR11 to AB12 is not possible.

When you need more information don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks a ton Raphael for this introduction. Yes i was a bit concerned since i learned about the newer versions of Acronis with the seprate SQL agends and such.

OK full restore is a bummer, especially since there is no hardware around at all. I will take this into concideration. Thank you.
