no access to network shares using 2017 b 5554

Thread needs solution

Summary:

1) Unable to access network shares that are available using explorer with uid and password, and in use over

a long while. When supplying my creds I just see the curt message `connection failed'

2) Attempting to move the acronis backup file to cloud, but the drop down that allows me to navigate to

that folder ends up giving the message:

`No files to archive found. The selected folder is empty or it contains only restricted files'

Its not empty so apparently restricted.

Details:

I wanted to back up a parition to networked host, both hosts running windows 10 on home lane.

Access in both directions is working thru explorer or any other standard tools for access of windows machines.

The shares are visable and accessible in explorer requiring only a user name and password.   Both have been

in use  for mnths.

However attempting to set the networked host as destination for the backup does not get passed entering my credentials.

Fails with no real info as to why; only the curt message 'access failed'.  Discouraging that something this basic

doesn't work at all.

I ended up making the backup to a different partition on same drive.  Later decided to get some use out of the

freebie 50 GB of cloud so attempted to move it there.  Using `archive' and using the right bottom

dropdown that by default says `analyze home folder' , so drop down and use `select different folder' then navigate

to the folder containing the backup file.  .. the intertace snaps back to `Analyze Home Folder' and displays the message:

`No file to archve found. The selected folder is empty or it contains only restricted files.'

So apparently I will not be able to move it to cloud either.  Finally ended up moving with explorer to the target

host.

Hopefully these problems are mostly pilot error... but hard to see how when the steps to follow are

pretty easy to see.

Can anyone coach me a bit here?

Harry, there have been a number of posts in these forums for users having issues with network shares where this can be caused by trying to connect to those shares by more than one different application / method at the same time, i.e. having your Windows Explorer accessing the share while trying to connect with ATIH.

Please see KB document: 58004: Acronis True Image 2016: Troubleshooting Issues Related to NAS Credentials which will provide guidance on a number of known issues in this area and how to resolve them.

For your attempt to Archive your backup image file (.TIB), put simply, this is not permitted as documented in the ATIH 2017 User Guide: What is excluded from archives? which states the following:

To reduce archive size and eliminate a possibility to corrupt your system, by default Acronis True Image excludes the following data from archives:

  • pagefile.sys
  • swapfile.sys
  • The Temp folder
  • The System Volume Information folder
  • The Recycle Bin
  • Web browser temporary data:
    • Temporary Internet files
    • Cache
  • .tib files
  • .tib.metadata files
  • .tmp files
  • .~ files

I'm also no longer able to backup to or access my NAS shares.

This was working fine until a few days ago. Now whatever I try, I cannot use NAS locations.

Rebooted both NAS and PC, tried password resets on NAS. Reset NAS to

Something has got badly broken here. I've been a user of Aconis for more than 5 years, always to the same NAS, and never had any problem in this area. Most definitely some kind of nasty software issue. Please do not direct me to some bland ""here's how to setup NAS" page or KB article. I'm an advanced user, and know NAS and SMB inside out. This is definitely not a config issue my side - Acronis is failing to access the NAS due to some software issue.

Edit: My suspicion here is that some recent Windows update could have changed an API or approach Acronis are using to login to NAS servers, and now Acronis is no longer compatible with SMB based NAS authentication. There were no NAS updates applied around the time this started happening. Just tried a later Synology DSM version, and that made no diference. So I suspect either a Windows Update has left Acronis no longer functional - don't see any Acronis updates recently, so that does not seem likely either.

Strongly recommend Acronis look into release notes for recent Windows 8.1 updates - I have a suspicion TrueImage may longer be compatible

Rob / Harry,

I am using a WD MyCloud with SMB/FTP as well as my ASUS AC-1900 router with attached USB hard drive and SMB share without issue.  There are plenty of others using SMB shares without issue as well.

However, there is indeed a bug if you have mapped drives in Windows and try to authenticate to an SMB share in Acronis 2017 5554 - been discussed and noted in Steve's note above.

Additionally, there are patches for this at the moment until the next official update.

59051: Acronis True Image 2017: Connection to NAS fails with errors "Connection failed", "Failed to check credentials", "Can not find files and folders".

Glad to help.

Disconnecting drive share didn't work for me, but using an IP address rather than name for the NAS seems to have sorted it.

I was loathe to apply patches, because it's easy to forget that when you update if the new version doesn't include a fix

So the backup seems to now work - but the consolidation fails. Looking at the message, it seems to still be trying to use the server name:

8 Acronis True Image 14/11/2016 08:15:24 The following backups have been successfully created: ""
9 Acronis True Image 14/11/2016 08:15:26 Consolidate Backup Archive Location: "" Destination: ""
10 Acronis True Image 14/11/2016 08:15:27 Failed to perform consolidation. Ensure that the credentials for accessing folder are correct.

Wonder if I will have to use the patch version after all

Two things you might try.

First, attempt to run a validation on the backup.  Select the backup by clicking on it in the GUI then click on the (v) to the right of the backup name and select Validate.  See if the problem persists.

Second, if the above fails to correct the problem remove the backup task from the list in the GUI.  Select the backup as outlined above then click on Delete.  You will be given 3 choices, Cancel, Delete entirely, and Remove.  Selecting Remove will remove the task from the list but will keep the backup file intact.  After that resart your PC, open True Image and select the (v) at the bottom of the backup task list column and select Add existing backup.  Browse to the backup location and add it back into the list.  You might need to use the IP address method to discover the backup in this process.

Keep in mind that you will have to reconfigure the backup task using method 2 above so you should make notes of the backup settings so that you can re-enter them during reconfiguration.

Hello Rob,

The cleanup task that is run each time after a .tib is created, takes previously remembered paths for backups. Paths are stored in these folders:

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

What Enchantech suggested should help, as it would update the records with the IP-address form of the path to the NAS. In case if the issue persists, there must be still orphaned records in the database, using the machine name of the NAS instead of the IP in the Database folder. In such case you can re-install the software with a cleanup tool. Then you would need to add previously created backups back and reconfigure the backup options. The database would be recreated from scratch and use only the working path's form, the one with IP-address.

Regards,

Slava

Great - thanks for that guys. Away from my NAS today, but should get chance to try these out over weekend or early next week

-Rob

So I tried all of the above, last part being remove and re-add the backup with manual recreation of options. No dice. Backup still seems to work with IP form, but consolidation seems to be trying to use hostname form (log below)

Wondering if I am going to need to try tha patch version after all just to get passed this. Or maybe an official version with the drive share fix in is not far around the corner and I can hold out for that.

You can try to run the Schedule Manager utility tool to remove all or specific scheduled backup tasks from the True Image application and then re-add the backups again along with reconfiguration of the task for the backups.  This tool will do a beter job of removing task information from the Task Scripts and Database than that of manual deletion.

You will find link to the utility along with usage instructions at the link below:

I seem to have the same problem Rob currently has. The problem started with 5554, but I updated to 5555. I worked with Acronis tech support on this issue, and somewhere along the way consolidation started passing. Without making any further changes to my system, consolidation is failing again.

My original backups and consolidations all take the path form of \\192.168.1.45\xxxx, and here are the failures:

I'm backing up to a Synology 1512+ NAS. Nothing else on my system is using the AcronisBackups hostname. My original case was [02840234] Archive consolidation fails. My new case is [02851275] RE: [02840234] Archive consolidation fails. I'm posting primarily to let others know that more than 1 person has this problem, and to add my troubleshooting steps so that others don't have to tread those paths.
