An "upgrade" is really just a purchase difference. The product is functionally identical to a full version purchase, except that the upgrade installer will need to see proof of ownership of a previous version. That can be achieved either by installing over top of an earlier version (which I don't recommend - do a full uninstall first), or by entering the previous versions product key as well as the new one.

2013 will restore backups made with 2012 and many earlier versions.

Today I purchased Acronis Upgrade to 2013. Tried to install it and after a very length time is said it did not have permission to change files, not sure why it said that as I am the administrator on this notebook computer.

Anyway, I tried your advice to first uninstall the older Acronis version and that failed as well.

Yet I have been using Acronis off and on for backups that again takes a very long time and does not even show progress in the progress bar; however, after hours, shutdown computer and when it reboots, says the backup was complete.

This problem I hoped would be solved with the upgrade, but now it will not uninstall the old nor install the new.

What are your thoughts?

Do a full uninstall of the previous version, and then run the Acronis Cleanup Utility for the version you uninstalled, and the Acronis 2013 Cleanup Utility. Reboot before installing the new ATI.

It's on the Acronis site. Sorry, I'm not at my regular computer so I don't have the link with me.

Here is the link to the 2013 utility. Follow all instructions carefully. In particular, do not let the utility reboot your computer. Complete the last 2 checks before doing so.

Thanks for your help on this. The utility worked and I was able to install the upgrade using the older and newer licence.

If you do not mind I have one other question that has been bothering me.

In the older version and now even in the new version there is a progress bar to show how things are moving along, but I have never seen anything show up there. I just sit and wait, or do something else. I sure would be great to know that that function worked. I know it is gathering information but it would be great to see how far along that process was etc.

I did discover that if I place the cursor over the icon in the tool bar is shows a percentage, but man one has to wait a long time to see a change. There is not even an estimate indicator of how long it might take to do a full image backup.

Can I purchase the Acronis BU 2013 for my currently installed 2009 version?

@Michael

Yes you can, but you will need to uninstall 2009 before installing 2013. Assuming your 2009 is True Image Home 2009 (as opposed to Seagate/WD DiskWizard ) you will just need to enter your 2009 serial number after the 2013 one.

The above refers to purchasing an upgrade version, if you purchase a full version, you will just need to uninstall 2009 and carry on as though you've never had True Image installed before.
