Back up not being noted as valid

Thread needs solution

Hi - I've just upgraded to TI 11. I've done a back up as usual, to an external USB drive but when I validate the back up, the description, 'This back up is valid' is not shown. It remains as, 'Back up completed successfully on....'

What am I doing wrong, please? There were no problems doing exactly the same thing before the upgrade, to exactly the same external drive.

Thanks.

I suppose you are talking about TI 2011 and not TI v11 (which precedes TI 2009).

The message "back up is valid" appears upon succesful validation.
Validation can be run right after the backup, on a separate schedule for each backup, or manually.

Look at the validation options under at you have the "validate after backup" checked in the back up options. Operations > Edit Backup Settings > Backup Options > Validation.

To trigger a validation manually, Operations > Validate Backup.

In addition to what Pat L has written, there is a good chance you lost your settiings when you updated your version.

After you verify or correct your settings, I would suggest that you click the "backup schemes" tab at top and then click your "ok" option from the "backup schemes: tab,

Pat L - thank you, but as I said, 'but when I validate the back up, the description, 'This back up is valid' is not shown. It remains as, 'Back up completed successfully on....' I run the back up, select 'Validate after back up' but there is no indication that it has been successful - 'The message "back up is valid" appears upon succesful validation.' does not appear.

GroverH - I'm doing a full back up each time but only have the option to validate when it is created. The only other option is Regular validation and then pick a schedule. I have just tried running a validation on a back up I did yesterday, and although the description remains as The back up has successfully completed, the date, which was previously 04/01/2011 has changed to , 'Today at 08.20'.

You are right, that issue/change escaped me :-/

What you are seeing is a UI design issue that I had not noticed with the last build. I am not getting the banners "backup is valid" any longer after validation (manual, scheduled or after backup). I am running Win 7 Ultimate x64.

I was not paying much attention to these banners because I saw some updating issues in the various 2011 builds and discrepancies between the control panel integration and the program UI behavior.

I have turned on validation after backup and I now go to the backup directory to see if the backup has run :-)

Oh, thank you! I was beginning to get desperate! It was really helpful, knowing that it had been validated. So I suppose I'll have to look at the View Log thing in the Help section?

I can sleep easy tonight. I put the same question on another forum, but most of the answers were along the lines of, 'Don't use Acronis, use what I use instead' which wasn't exactly helpful!

Yep, your can go to the log, or have the log emailed to you by ATI (email notification settings)

Interestingly, I am running 3 licenses of the same 6597 build on a Win 7 Ultimate machine, and XP SP3 machine and a Vista Home Premium machine. Both the XP and the Win 7 machine don't update the banners to reflect successful validation, but the Vista machine does live in the UI.
- run backup, get succesful completion banner,
- run validation manually, banner switches to back up is valid (only on Vista)

I tried the email settings, but despite trying every combination of user names and passwords, I couldn't get a result.

Do you mean you couldn't get a test message out?
If no:
- verify the smtp information, including the port number,
- enter your username as you would for a POP3 email client. For example, for Yahoo!, suppose jsmith is your username, you will need jsmith@yahoo.com here. jsmith will not work.
- make sure the encryption drop down shows the right setting as well.

If you try your settings with a client like Windows live mail or Thunderbird, better.

You might have issues if your ISP doesn't required a username and password for the SMTP server, or if the port is not a standard 25 or 465 port, per other posts.

BTW, Acronis doesn't send an email for a manual validation, and I didn't try for a scheduled one. I use it for backup + validation.

Thank you - the smtp and port number are ok, and I've use the full email sddress as you say. I think I'll give up! I'll just check the log.

You've been very helpful - thanks again
