Home 2012 NAS issues

Thread needs solution

Been using Acronis since True Image 10, archiving daily snapshots off to my Buffalo Terastation NAS without issues. UNTIL True Image Home 2012 was installed yesterday, that is.

Given all the hype about the NAS support in 2012 I thought I'd upgrade immediately, but have had nothing but problems.

I cannot create any backup jobs on the NAS because there is "an error accessing the file" (a ticket has been sent to support on this, but no reply yet).

Today I was playing with Non-Stop Backup, writing again to the NAS. This service starts, but ALWAYS fails about half way through. Non-Stop Backup turns OFF and I cannot restart it unless I reboot the PC.

When I play around with the start/stop buttons I get:

An Error occurred while stopping Acronis Non-Stop backup
Event code: 0x00E4002F+0x00E40021+0x0000FFF0+0x800706BA

I'm starting to regret upgrading...

Thread locked as duplicate, main NAS discussion thread here.

Mark,

Do you still get the problem of NSB stopping if the NAS is disconnected?

Can you image a small file to the NAS OK?

I'm wondering if it or 2012 is timing out.

Hi there Mark

similar for me.

Till yesterday I used ATI2011 and had no problems using my nas (DS 411 slim and DNS323 before). Both worked great.

after Installing ATI2012 i was able to run a task that was created under ATI2011 doing a backup to my network path on the nas, but i cant recorver it under acronis. If i press the recover button i get an error.

If i tyr to seach for backups in my network. i can move to the folder where i stored them but i cant see the backups in the folder. it seems hat i cant see any tib files stored some where in the network.

If i try to create a new backup task i am not able to acces the NAS neitehr via "windows/network way " (what i was used to under ati2011 in my homegroup) nor via the new /nas path. it ends in "an error accessing the file"...

There is something complete gone wrong with the network access and nas support...... or its all a new feature.

Same thing for me. Tried an eval of 2011 and everything was cool. Bought 2012 today and installed it and now it can't see any of my backups, and either hangs or gives me "Access to the file is denied". messages.

Very disappointed.

Same here, no problems with 2011 version.. install 2012 and now get the 'access to file is denied'... have to say i am losing confidence in acronis products.

Same problem here... Did backup to a NAS (Synology DS1010+ with latest OS) and it fails everytime with a locked files error since I upgraded... The locked files message is for different files everytime (the are no open application running on my system when the backup runs at night)...

Why cant we have an option to ignore file locks an automatically continue or have a way for it to handle locked files?

Running it on Win 7 x64 with all the latest patches..

I have the same issue. Both versions 2010 and 2011 allowed me to backup to a NAS. Now with version 2012 I can either not navigate to the folder on the NAS where I want to store the backups or I get a 'access to file is denied' if I try to save to a location that is visible in the window. Ticket has been opened.

> Now with version 2012 I can either not navigate to the folder on the NAS where I want to store the backups

Do you by any chance also have a drive letter mapped to your storage? Trying to back up to a Windows 7 drive share I discovered that this doesn't work for me unless I un-map all drive letters I normally map for the server of interest... even if I'm trying to specify a UNC path.

I don't know if this is a similar issue to yours or not, but it produced similar symptoms.

-Greg

He Gregory,

same here, i could run an backup to a windows 7 drive share that was created in ATI2011. But i was not able to modify the task or to creat a new backup to the share.

I will try to do it like you and unmap all shares.

On thing to the new synchonis feature.

S22

Hi Greorgy again

same here..... if i unmap all windows 7 drive shares i can direktly search a nas drive and all files are shown as usual...
well keep youn informed

@ ACRONIS..... think its time for your action about this issue: Problem winows network drives prevent Acronis true image to work propper.

S22

I've had a similar issue and remote support eventually found the problem. I have a PC with built in card reader with 4 slots for different types of media cards. The PC assigns drive letters to the slots F:, G:, H: & I: even if they have no cards in. ATI 2012 fails when scanning for source and destination folders to use even if you expressly tell it to use a folder on a NAS drive like \\NASDevice\Folder.

The solution was to hide the drive letters for unused slots. Windows 7 64 bit has an option to do this but it fails to work on my system. I have found some software (Windows service) that performs the same task without a problem. It can be found at www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html

Hi all,

also sync seems to work propper after unmount the drives in windows i want to sync.

@ Norman,

i also have a catd reader. I will try to hide the unused "drives" and see what happens

S22

Good luck.  You can switch 'Hide empty drives' in folder options.  It didn't work for me but the software I linked to does.

Screenshot

It seems that by re-creating the network drive mapping the problem with browsing my NAS has disappeared. I had one folder on my NAS mapped to a W7 letter.

Thanks for the hint!
:)

PS: Little disappointment. After a reboot of the PC, the problem appears again.
:(

Hi marcepa

same here till i restartet my computer and the problem is there again.

@ Norman
Hiding the drive letters didnt make any difference for m :-(. I even disabled the usb controler for that cardreader....no change:-(

Similiar Issue here:

Try to backup to a Server 2008 share - with no password - r/w for all.
I am able to see the share in acronis , but if I click the share, I am not able to browse the folders. Same If I disconnect the share in windows explorer and try to open it with \\network\server\share in the acronis gui
I had an old backup specification from 2011 to this share. If I try to edit it, i'll get a "error accessing the file". Why? The network / share works fine in normal windows explorer!

Any hints?

Christian

Hello all,

Thank you for your posts. I will do my best to help you with this problem.

I would recommend to contact our Support team with this report so that we can investigate this issue.

Mark, I followed-up with the Support representative working on your case and we will get back to you shortly.

If you have additional questions about your cases feel free to contact me directly.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

 Hello all,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

We should give the issue a closer investigation.

To improve the situation we should collect some diagnostic files.

First of all, please try to create a new task and to perform the backup/restore operations by new task (i.e. please make sure that the task wasn't corrupted during the upgrade from 2011 to 2012)

After that, if you agree to provide us with Acronis system report, please send me Private Message with the reference to this thread. Also please mention the exact model of your NAS device.

This information will help us to fix the encountered issues and to implement fixes for the future releases.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Hi there,

a new task works fine for me as long as i dont wanna store the backup under network location.

-> New task on local hard disk, ATI2012 working as usual so far
-> New task on network drive: cant create the task as long as a windows drive is mapped.

Hmm do i see it wrong or seem quite a few people with this problem have synology nas server?

S22

I personally never use mapped drive letters to get to the NAS (Synology DS1010+)... UNC paths seem like the way to go (IMO) to avoid drive letters getting remapped, etc...

I can't even have it finish a back up to a local drive due to some file being locked (the files are different each time)..

UPDATED: Interesting find...... When I put in the Authentication Settings (Edit creditials) to get to the NAS, it takes ANY username and password and says Connection established when I test it - even though that username does not exist anywhere... When I put in a good username and password, it also says Connection established, but does not show any of the folders on the NAS....

Same here:
"-> New task on local hard disk, ATI2012 working as usual so far"

Not the same:
"-> New task on network drive: cant create the task as long as a windows drive is mapped. "--> I cant create the task, even if the drive is not mounted!

Similiar here:
"When I put in the Authentication Settings (Edit creditials) to get to the NAS, it takes ANY username and password and says Connection established when I test it - even though that username does not exist anywhere... When I put in a good username and password, it also says Connection established, but does not show any of the folders on the NAS...."
--> I can see the root folder - if I want to click one of them, nothing happens

If I try to use an old backupspec from ATI2011, that was backing up to the share, i got t "an error accessing the file" !

 Hello all,

Thank you for your responses.

We have opened separate cases with Steven Britton and with C Rübsamen.

If somebody wants to join, please send me a  Private Message.

Thank you.

Received anybody any feedback from this cases?
I still have the problem and I am not able to backup anything to my backupshare !

Try referencing your NAS drive by IP address rather than name, that cured my problem once the drive mappings were removed.

e.g. \\192.168.0.101\backups

Hi, all,

I have a Qnap server and have the trial version of Acronis True Image 2012 and everytime I try to schedule a backup now, getting access to the file is denied. I even tried updating my firmware on the QNAP 419 P+. Can you all advise on this? I tried using domain name\user, user name, even administrator, still can't get it to go.

I'm having similar issues. You can see my post in this thread:

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/24769

as well as posts from other users. I tried a beta version of 2012 and it worked fine. Something has been seriously broken in the release version.

I am still waiting for an update for my case-number ... nothing new in the last weeks (!) ...
Sorry, that is no support !

Hello all,

Thank you all for your comments.

C Rübsamen, let me help you with this issue. I am very sorry to read about it, let me provide you with additional information.

I can see that you have been working with Oleg from our Testing Lab directly who created a task for this problem. According to our Development team it has been resolved and the fix will be available in Update 1. We also have your support case in our system, I have updated the Support working with this information.

If you have additional questions about the case feel free to contact me via a private message.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

It's reassuring to hear from Acronis that this problem will be fixed in Update 1, however it would be nice to know when Update 1 will be available to all of us who have been suffering with this problem.

I bought this product spefically because I wanted to sync from my PC to NAS and am disgusted that Acronis could release a product that clearly has not been tested properly.

An update for you all. Just spoken with Acronis and they said a fix is still being developed (which goes against what Anton said earlier in this thread), but it will indeed be in Update 1. However they have no planned date for release of this update. All they would say is that it's being treated as a high priority and will be out "in the near future".

I did argue that any fix should be released immediately and we shoulf not have to wait until an official update, but you can imagine the repsonse I go to that. In the meantime I off back to TI 2010....at least that seemed to work.

Yea, told 2 weeks as well. Then heard that a beta for Upgrade 1 was held last week and did not go so well... Can anyone from Acronis PLEASE let us know what is going on. These NAS issues are killing us. Many of us have been loyal users for years and made significant investments in NAS as part of our backup strategy. To have 2012 kill a working backup solution is a real pain -- but if we had some idea of when this pain might end, we could make some decisions. But we need information. PLEASE.

 Hello all,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

We are working on the issues reported. I have created a separate case for every customer who send me a Private Message and who agreed to investigate the issue with us. Many problems were resolved, the fixes were included into the program. Some problems are still under investigation, but they are of a high priority, and we are planning to improve the behavior for the nearest released build.

Since the amount of the NAS vendors and models is very large, I am not sure that we have covered the entire list of  possible problems that may arise. That's why I may propose the following:

Please send me a Private Message with the exact model of your NAS device and with a description of the software failure. I will check the database, probably, the issue is already fixed. If not, we will investigate it together.

Thank you.

Well, so far I am not seeing any solid movement on resolving the issues.

For me, ATIH 2011 has never worked properly on my NAS. A trial of ATIH 2012 was even more broken. I'm not talking about some special NAS functionality. I'm talking about using standard SMB windows sharing, using either UNC or mounted drives.

After a lot of discussion, it was agreed that I would receive a free upgrade to ATIH 2012 since 2011 has never worked properly for me. I downloaded a trail 2012, and found that it was more broken than 2011.

Just to be clear: I have never been able to make a trouble free backup to either of my NAS devices using 2011 or 2012.

Frankly, I have had it. I will be asking for my money back.

I have the same problem. My NAS is Apple's "Time Capsule".
ATIH2012 does not see "\\NAS\Data". Neither ""\\10.0.1.1\Data". It sees the share drive Z: and can't open it.
Let me know, when the solution is available.

==> Apple's "Time Capsule"
Not familiar with this device. Does it support SMB windows sharing, windows network shares, windows mounted drives, etc? On my devices, individual protocols need to be enabled. What OS are you running?

Dear hhansard,

yes, the NAS Apple Time Capsule supports SMB. SMB is permanently enabled and is its only protocol to connect to PCs. In Window's file explorer, the hard disc is available to read and write.

==> In Window's file explorer, the hard disc is available to read and write.
accessed via network browser, mapped drive, either/or?

Dear hhansard,

when I call the NAS "\\NAS\Data" or "\\10.0.1.1\Data", the access is via network browser.
When I call it "Z:", the access is via mapped drive. Both is available simultaneously.
By the way, I have Windows 7.

I don't understand the difference between SMB windows sharing and windows network shares.

Was having problems with the 2012 release version. Support sent me a beta of the upgrade 1 and it worked quite a bit better for browsing the resource and setting-up jobs. Would suggest you post a support ticket and ask for the beta revision. SMB/shares/etc -- different names, same game.

Just had a long online-chat session with Vikram Singh.

I gave him access to my computer and he was able to see the problem first hand, and find a workaround that seems to be working.

The NAS is accessible by IP address - so when specifying the backup location, use browse and then type in the IP address of your nas - you should be able to ping it from the cmd prompt if you don't already know it. This will allow ATIH 2012 to then browse the folders on the nas and access them properly.

I asked Vikram to post a bug report, so hopefully this will be resolved soon!

Hi Geoff

"and find a workaround that seems to be working"....
Well i think maybe Vikram read all the threads that posted this workaround at least 3 weeks ago ;-) (even this thread see answer from norman).

meanwhile there must be a couple of bug reports about the same issue now and still no solution available.

Geoff, dont miss understand.....not at all against you. good thing that you gave them access to your system but If acronis still did not accept that the release has major issues i dont know what we can do. I had confirmation from acronis about this bug an there afford to find a sollution some weeks ago. Me and i think a couple of other users sent system reports, detailed descriptions and workarounds to acronis...... Seems that the left hand of acronis does not know what the right hand does.

Well I've been having a torrid time with the new True Image 2012, I will be advising my readers not to upgrade at this point (I run a small self-help Windows website). I only just managed to get the software to install by completely reinstalling my operating system!

I never understood why True Image products struggled so much with permissions on network shares. This version isn't the first to struggle with it, but the problem seems to have got a lot worse. If Windows Explorer can open a file on a share, as well as every other program running on my user account, why on earth can't True Image?

I'm using a ReadyNAS NV+, when I browse to a network share to locate a backup in True Image 2012, I have to click on and off the share a couple times before the root directory is shown, even when it is, I cannot browse down any further than the top directory! If I type the location of the backup in manually (e.g //network-resource/my-backup/backup.tib) I can add it to the list but if I try to open the backup, I get the "Access to the file is denied" message. I can browse to this file, move, delete or do as I please with it in Windows Explorer, even when running Windows Explorer as administrator.

Using the suggested workaround (navigating to the NAS by IP instead of by name) got me a little bit further, I only had to put in the credentials for the network share twice, yes, the same credentials that I use to log into my computer and every other program that I run on my PC can seem to use to access the network share without issue. With this workaround I did not get the "Access to the file is denied" message, but then all kinds of crazy things started to happen. Clicking on "Recover" for the backup bought up a window telling me to choose the source and the destination, but only allowing me to select the source (destination area was just blank, no partitions listed). There was also a very long pause so long I thought the program might have crashed. Actually cancelling out and back in a third time did let me choose the destination partitions.

Acronis are so unpredictable when it comes to software quality, the 2011 and 2010 versions were solid products, the 2009 version on the other hand was a bug ridden mess in my experience. I really hope Acronis can pull it together and release this fix pack soon. In the meantime I clearly can't trust this version with any important data, so I'm going back to 2011.

(note, edited above after I realised in one instance I'd actually clicked the wrong backup in the list *rolls eyes*

@Acronis --- would suggest you provide the latest Beta build to these NAS users to see how far you've gotten in fixing the issues... From the feedback list you have from me, you did address many of MY issues, but would be good for all concerned to see how you are going with these guys...

I can't believe anyone is persevering with the pile of junk that is ATIH 2012. Months after release it still doesn't work, and what are Acronis doing about it....occasionally dishing out betas of the upgrade (that shouldn’t even be necessary at this stage) and getting their user base to test it!! You couldn’t make this up.

Incompetent development, little or no proper testing and a hit-and-miss approach to post-live support. It beggars belief. For a company that’s been in this particular sector for many years, it is completely unacceptable an inexcusable. Oh, and don't get me started on the new UI which looks like it's been designed for (or maybe by) a 3 year old.

I’ve been a, relatively, satisfied customer for many years, but no longer and never again. I got the refund and bought a decent product instead. Anyone with any sense will do the same.

 Hello all,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

hhansard,

From the feedback list you have from me, you did address many of MY issues, but would be good for all concerned to see how you are going with these guys...

We are working with all of our customers who agreed to investigate the encountered issues with us. And many of our customers confirmed the final resolution (from the technical point of view we provide with a build where the fix was implemented for verification).

Thank you.

I did a little more testing on a test-rig with True Image 2012, here's what I found...

Using the IP Address rather than the friendly name (//myshare) does work. There's a long pause after opening a backup on the NAS but after that things went OK for the most part. If the destination drives are not shown when you tick/check the source partitions in a backup, unticking/checking them will solve the problem.

Using this workaround, I was able to do a recovery of the system (C: drive) from my NAS directly back to the computers boot drive, everything worked correctly. In the Acronis recovery environment, I was not prompted for my NAS credentials again which surprised me and suggest that Acronis have their own credential manager for network shares, which might be the cause of some of the issues.

If you use mapped network drives these will not be available if or when you boot into the Acronis rescue/recovery environment, it might be a good idea for the program to prompt something like "Using mapped drive letters is not recommended, would you like this path automatically converted?"

I'll still be sticking with 2011 until the patch is out, but at least this seems to be a viable workaround for anyone who's upgraded.

Am having same issue, Can't connecto to my QNAP Server :(, I can't evevn backup access denied. Didn't have this problem with 2011 it was working great.

2012 though is the same as 2011 but added a new interface but doesn't work. Looking in getting a refund now I DON'T HAVE THE TIME to wait for support getting back to me wasting time and not be able to do backups. So going back to 2011 which worked.
