Unable to Create Volume Snapshot

Thread needs solution

I have a recent problem. All was fine till a couple of days ago when the backup failed with the words:-

Operation with partition '3-0' was terminated. Unable to create volume snapshot.

I researched this in these forums and, as a result of what I read, I ran ChkDsk on every partition. A few indexing problems were found but nothing major and Windows has corrected those. Still I received the same error message. I tried Acronis Report and that told me there were errors on every disk, although ChkDsk tells me otherwise.

So I tried a new SnapAPI install. I still get the same error message.

Where do I go from here, please?

Did you use the /R option of chkdsk?

If yes, go to your disk manufacturer's website and see if you find some diagnostics tool for your disk. Most of them require to burn an ISO to a disk and boot on it. We have seen many times errors in the hidden partitions, or errors in visible partitions that are not seen by chkdsk.

I accessed ChkDsk through Windows Explorer and, yes, I selected the repair option.

I will access Western Digital's website for a disk checker and let you know the result.

I have now run the initial Western Digital test and the disks passed.

Did you run the test with the WD test bootble CD or whatever they have? I would not rely too much on tests run in Windows...

If yes, I would try to uninstall ATI, reboot and reinstall.

It this doesn't solve it, I am running out of ideas since you already tried to install snapman.

The test that WD provide is designed to be run from Windows and not from a CD. I do have a disk checker on a CD but it is from Seagate although it does check other makes.

I am currently running the second test, which is an extended test and checks the actual sectors. The quick test checks the SMART values and I knew they were ok anyway (I use CrystalDiskInfo). This extended test has over two hours left before it finishes. If that checks ok, I will try the Seagate disk. After that I will have to try the re-install you suggest. I will let you know the result. It will be tomorrow before I have that result.

Hi Pat,

Still no success. The WD long test insists that my drives are fine. As does the Seagate test.

Then, by trial and error, I found that the partition ATI 2013 does not like is C drive (the main Windows partition). By unticking C drive in ATI, the backup completed without errors. I then had a close look at C and cleaned up the files. I then ran ChkDsk on it once more. Everything I try tells me there is nothing wrong with the disk so I must assume that the problem is in the software. The actual error thrown up by ATI is:

Any more ideas, please? I am tempted to run a Windows recovery from the CD but would appreciate any other ideas first.

Hi Pat,

All now solved. I tried to do a repair on Windows and very strange things kept happening. It seems Windows was more deeply corrupted than I thought. So I reformatted the OS partition and re-installed Windows. All is now working well (and a lot faster as well).

Thank you very much for your help.
