Testing the waters...

Thread needs solution

I want to like this, and will probably buy if I can understand some things. I am running the trial of 2011 Home. I did a backup yesterday using 'version chain', and scheduled it to run nightly. It ran last night and the first incremental backup is BIGGER than the initial backup(!). Why would that be so?

My initial backup from yesterday is called computer_c.tib, 18,743MB
The backup last night is called computer_c(1).tib, 20,086MB

This isn't the way I thought version chain was supposed to work. Or am I not understanding something?

OS is Win7 64bit, source drive is an Intel SSD 120G, destination is a network share conventional HD.

Thanks

My honest advice as a Acronis True Image Home 2010 and 2011 license owner is to look elsewhere for your backup needs. I liked TIH 2010, but 2011 is just not a good, reliable product. Another software vendor will be getting my money in the future.

As far as a more direct answer to your question, they append (x) to your backups as increments of the previous number. If you have it set to do a full backup every so often, then you'll get another set of numbers that increment and you will see backups like "computer_c(1)(1).tib", "computer_c(1)(2).tib", "computer_c(1)(3).tib", etc. It annoyed me at first too, but then I realized that the name of the backup doesn't really matter to me so long as I know the dates they were performed.

Thanks, Scott. While I don't particularly like parens in filenames, my main concern is why is the incremental backup bigger than the initial backup?

Also, after backing up yesterday, then rebooting, my PC hung for 15 minutes with a "windows is busy" message. Apparently TIH was validating the first backup even though I told it not to.

I'm curious as to your opinion on where to look for a better solution. I just (heh) want something that does the job reliably with no fuss, is easy to set up and understand, and doesn't cost a fortune.

Shroom,

When you choose version chain, the program does first a full backup. This one will never be deleted. Then The program starts a chain of full/incrementals, as you can see in the animation when you select this backup scheme.
So now, you have 2 fulls. YOu should something like computer_c(1)2 next time.
