Does TRue image 2021 cloning Tool works to move my on-going system disk (SSD) to a new Mother Board and an NvME system r board o

Thread solved

Hi

I want move my System disk ( a standard 500 Gig sata SSD)  from an old Mother Board to a newer Mother Noard supportin NvME disks (Z690 Intel chipset) .

I do not want to install Windows but move the existing System and applications using cloning or may be restauration.

Is there any technical impossibility  to move from an SSD to nVME ?

Many Thanks for help.

The quick answer to your topic question is no!  You shouldn't be trying to use Cloning to do what you are asking.

The approach that is recommended is described in the KB documents below:

See KB 65413: Acronis True Image 2021: Restoring to dissimilar hardware with Acronis Universal Restore and in particular review Steps 4 and 5 of this document.

Also KB 2149: Acronis Universal Restore

KB 36187: Windows activation required after restore with Acronis Universal Restore, cloning or converting backup to virtual machine

KB 45432: Acronis Software: Troubleshooting Universal Restore and Bootability Issues

KB 46405: Acronis True Image: Restored Operating System Fails to Boot

You should make a full disk backup of your old working Windows OS & applications etc while still using the old motherboard with this stored on an external HDD.

Next, you should do the motherboard replacement and install the NVMe SSD (if intending to make this your Windows boot drive) then do a clean install of Windows to that drive (for the purpose of being able to create Acronis bootable rescue media that includes device support for the new motherboard capabilities).  You will need to install ATI 2021 with Windows.

At this point you should be able to boot the PC from the rescue media and go through the process outlined for AUR above.

If you are using Windows 10 or 11, then you may not need to use AUR if you can boot into Windows after doing the image recovery as Windows may discover all your new hardware components.

See KB 65508: Acronis True Image 2021: how to create bootable media and KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

Thank you Steeve.

I understand that the Save and Restore prodedure is the cleanest but  If i understand correctly the "save and restore" works only for moving  the Windows O.S.  Am i Right  or i missed something ?

My main concern is to move  all my "System" : not only Windows but  my professional software as they are installed with their settings, swap places, licences numbers, screen calibration, links etc etc. This is the most complex and long work for moving a complete system to a new HW.

Is  save and restore capable to transfer  everithing as installed on the original disk ?

Thanks in advance.

(My concern is not for moving data : my huge amount of pure data are located on separate data disks or server)

Save and Restore moves all data on the source disk, so the OS, applications, etc.

Please see KB 19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS which confirms this.
