Acronis OS Selector reports no OS present.

Thread needs solution

I have downloaded a trial version of Acronis Disk Director to a Hewlett-Packard xw4400 workstation with MS Vista as its sole OS. In exploring the Disk Director features I opened the Acronis OS Selector. It reports that I have no OS installed. Worse, now I cannot boot into Vista, and I cannot disable nor unistall Acronis Disk Director. The OS Selector has taken control of that computer. Any suggestions please?

Hello geoffdee,

If I understand you correctly - after activation of OS Selector you're not able to deactivate it and boot to your Vista, am I right?

If yes, the cause is that OS Selector is not able to detect Vista OS in some cases (most often for OEM versions). We have already fixed it in the latest build (2239) for Acronis Disk Director Suite. But we still experience this issue in single cases, when you have build-in recovery partition (for example, EISA partition for some laptop models).

Ok, let's fix the issue with non bootable system. This error has occurred because OS Selector rewrites MBR with its own code, so we should just fix it. Here are the instructions on how to do that for Vista systems:

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the CD\DVD disc drive, and then (re)start the computer;
2. Press a key when you are prompted;
3. Select language, time, currency, keyboard or input method, and then click Next;
4. Click Repair your computer;
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next;
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt;
7. Type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

If you want to completely rebuild Boot Configuration Data, then you should issue the following command:
Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
This command scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista. Additionally, this option lets you select the installations that you want to add to the Boot Configuration Data store.

When your Vista is bootable, please check the build number for your trial version, you can find in the Help -> About dialog (it should be a 3 or 4 digit number)? If the build is not the latest, please let us know, I will be able to provide you with the update.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Thanks, Alexander. This looks promising.

The Vista OS came pre-installed. So, first, I've got to get the Windows Vista installation disc from Hewlett-Packard. I guess there will be a few days delay until it arrives. I'll let you know how I get on after that.

The OS Selector came with the Acronis Disk Director Suite Trial Version 10.0, build 2,160. I am reluctant to open the OS Selector itself for fear of entering the same "bottomless pit" again. However, if you wish to know the build of the OS Selector, let me know. Now, armed with the Vista installation disk, I'll be able to handle with the remedial procedure.

My computer is functioning normally again. Many thanks for your help.

Hello Geoffrey,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

We are really glad to hear that the computer is functioning normally.

I would like to remind you that in the new build #2239 the issue with the OEM versions of Windows Vista has been resolved.

.Thank you.

I have the same problem with a toshiba laptop. I have a recovery disk, not an installation disk. Will that do?

Hello Andrew,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.

There are several web resources that provide you with the possibility to obtain the respective CD. You can use Google search to find them. For example, I found this link

Thank you.

Hi, I have the same issue with my Toshiba laptop. I went and got the recovery disk iso and used it to bootre.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr and os selector still could not find Vista. So I reboot back to the recovery disk and did the Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd and after returning to Vista it still could not find my OS. Any thoughts on what it could be? I would like to buy this software if it is going to work for me that is why I am trying the demo version out. For info this is Acronis Disk Director Suite® Trial version 10.0 (build 2,160). Hope you can help.

Did you download the DD trial version recently? If so, I'm surprised that Acronis still has it at build 2,160. The Vista detection problem was supposed to have been fixed in build 2,239 (I haven't tested it, though).
