Cannot Restore Image created with 2014 Premium

Thread needs solution

Hello,

My I3 computer crashed.  Something went out on the motherboard and my HD also got corrupted.  So I bought a new computer and have been trying to do a restore.  My problem is I get a message that says "Recover operation failed."  Looking in the logs I see:

Internal error: number of copied sectors differ from counted

I can look at all the files from the backup with acronis, just cant restore the backup.

I have tried

1) copying 1 partition at a time
2) re-sizing

neither have worked.  I dont have disk director, so I tried running testdisk but I am probably not doing something right.  Can anyone help me get my image restored?  Thanks in advance.

Brad, what exactly are you trying to restore here?  

From your description, it sounds like you have a backup of your old i3 computer and you are trying to restore this to a new computer you have bought, which if is so, then this would require the use of Acronis Universal Restore to try to prepare the restored OS to work on the new hardware.

If you are running a different version of Windows on your new computer and are just looking to restore your user data from your old backup files, then provided you have installed the ATIH 2014 application on the new computer, you could browse the backup files from within Windows Explorer by just double-clicking on the .TIB file.

If your new computer has Windows 10, then officially ATIH 2014 is not supported to be installed or used on Windows 10, so you would need to use the Acronis bootable Rescue Media  to boot the new computer and attempt to recover your data.

I am assuming that your backup files were on a different disk drive to the drive that was corrupted?

I am trying to restore using a 2014 Acronis bootdisk and using Universal Restore by checking the box and yes my backup data was on another USB drive.

Brad, thanks for the clarification.  

Does your new computer support the same boot mode as was used on the old one, i.e. did the old computer boot using Legacy / BIOS / MBR and if so, does your new computer support booting the same way?  Or did the old computer use EFI (UEFI) with Secure Boot, and the new one the same?  This is important as when you restore the OS from the old computer to the new one, it won't boot if the bootloader method has changed, plus Acronis may also try to convert the restored partitions from MBR to GPT.   The Acronis bootable Rescue Media should also be booted in the same mode as the old Windows OS used.

Another important point is how the disk controller is supported between the old & new systems - older systems used AHCI whereas newer systems tend to opt to use RAID even for a single disk system - these again have to match if the restored OS is to work on the new system.

The steps for doing this type of migration are as follows:

  1. Boot the new system using the Acronis Rescue Media then assuming you can see all drives needed, restore your backup image to the new drive.
  2. Shutdown, disconnect the backup drive, then boot the new system using the Acronis Universal Restore media.
  3. Select the restored OS and allow the AUR program to prepare this to work with the new / different hardware.  If AUR requests additional device drivers then provide these if available or recreate the AUR media with those device drivers added.  The most likely additional device drivers are those for the new chipset and disk controller.  You do not need to add drivers for the majority of components in the new system as these will be detected during Windows startup or you can install drivers later from within Windows.  This step may need to be repeated as needed.
  4. Shutdown, remove all bootable media / external drives etc, and try to boot into Windows.
