Cloning Hard Disk?

Thread needs solution

Hey,

Bought Acronis True Image 2015 a while back now, never actually got round to using it.

Recently my main HDD for programs and games etc (OS is on its own SSD) got quite full, so decided to buy a new HDD double the size and clone my old one to the new. I assumed that was a pretty simple task, turns out its not :p

Can this even be done?

I tried following the cloning options and once I get to the stage where it restarts and boots into Acronis, all I get is a message titled "Acronis Bootable agent is waiting for removable devices". I click Yes and let it wait, then it comes up again, and again. Its just stuck here.

Any Advice?

Thanks

Stuart

Stuart, welcome to these user forums/

It sounds like you are starting the clone operation from within Windows which is not recommended.  Cloning should be performed using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media completely outside of the Windows OS.

In your case, you could attempt to do what you want here without using cloning at all, and to do it from within Windows too, as you are not touching the OS drive (SSD).

I would suggest trying the following process:

  1. Create a full disk drive backup of your HDD with programs & games to an external backup drive.
  2. Connect your new larger HDD to your computer along with your backup drive.  Depending on your system this could be on a spare SATA connector or via a USB cable (SATA to USB).
  3. Restore the full disk backup image from your external backup drive to your new larger HDD.
Note: You will be shown options to resize the restored data to fit the larger drive that you can take or else leave the sizing 'as is' which will leave the extra space unallocated.  If wanting to be extra safe, you could disconnect the original HDD before connecting the new larger drive.
Note 2: If ATIH 2015 is run from your HDD drive and not from your OS SSD drive, then you will not be able to disconnect the HDD.  The alternative will be to boot from the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to perform the restore of the HDD data to the larger drive.

See post: 117004: Great Acronis "How-To" videos and other Acronis Resources which may be helpful in understanding how to use Acronis.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried using the bootable media too but had no joy there either. It wouldn't show any drives other than my SSD and the usb I booted from.

Would the method you suggested be effectingly clothing the drive also? I have an absolute ton of programs installed (its a 2TB drive and its full), so I really don't want to have to be reinstalling them all?

Thanks

Stuart, yes the method should be the equivalent of cloning the drive.

The most likely cause of the bootable media not seeing your drives is that it doesn't have the necessary device drivers for the hardware involved.  One way around this is to create the Windows PE Rescue Media via the Rescue Media Builder tool - the WinPE media will either recognise your devices or you will need to modify it to add the necessary device drivers as per post: 100770: Guide to Add Drivers to WinPE Recovery Media

Please check that the size of your new HDD drive is supported by your system.
