Questions on upgrade to TI 2013 and Plus Pack

Thread needs solution

I am a complete novice and have been using TI 11 on occasion to create full image backups periodically.

My Compaq pc with Win XP is 8 years old and may need replacement soon but I have a few questions that perhaps SKS would be winning to answer:

1. the TI 11 I am using is somehow interconnected to the Seagate DiskWizard and will only work when the Seagate Wizard is available. If I upgrade to TI2013 will this create a problem or will TI2013 overwrite both TI11 and Seagate DiskWizard inasmuchas it is not an update but a full upgrade?

2. How many copies of TI2013 am I able to run - should I get a new pc with Windows 7 or 8?

3. Will Plus Pack allow me to transfer a full image of my Win XP files, programs and operating system to a new pc running a later version of Windows?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Frank,

Assuming you are going to continue using XP on a new PC and that your reference to TI 11 is TI 11 and not TIH 2011.

1. Uninstall the DiskWizard version and make a clean install of 2013. TI 2013 will be able to read your images, but it is better to make completely new tasks.

2. I copy per PC/Virtual Machine. Your DiskWizard is, as you've found out, locked to systems that only have Seagate drives installed, so you will still have a licence to use this and you will need a separate one for 2013. If you wish to run 2013 on more than one PC, the best deal at the moment would be to buy a 3 pack at the special Christmas price.

3. No, the Plus Pack will allow you to port your XP system on to new hardware and install with the new motherboard drivers. There is only one software company that claim to be able to update registry correctly to update XP -> W7/8 installs. What you are better off doing is to restore your XP image to your new machine with all the new drivers and then allow Windows 7/8 to upgrade itself over that. You may need to update your drivers again after doing this.

If you are purchasing a new brand name PC most will now come with Windows 8, personally I would go for Windows 7, but that is only because I'm a stuck in the mud and think the new W8 desktop is fine for touchscreen devices but lousy as far as keyboard based input is concerned.

If you get a computer manufacturers PC as apart from a PC shop or home built PC, it will come with Secure Boot enabled and a UEFI BIOS, the recovery CD for True Image has difficulty at the moment with this set up requiring tyou to disable Secure Boot and switch the UEFI entry to legacy so that the recovery CD can boot your system. If a PC shop or you build the new PC, Secure Boot is unlikely to be required and UEFI or Legacy BIOS will depend on the motherboard used. The system needs to be returned to its default settings after you have finished with the recovery CD so that W8 can boot.

Windows 7 has none of these new features.

You may find a number of your products will require reactivation after moving to a new motherboard.

Many thanks for the responses to my queries. My computing skills fall between novice and obsessive learner. I will read and reread your comments to digest their content and meaning.

You said...: If you wish to run 2013 on more than one PC, the best deal at the moment would be to buy a 3 pack at the special Christmas price.? Has Acronis tweaked their software in later versions - with TI11 I was able to save the .exe file and install it to my daughter XP pc and it seems to function satisfactorily?

I am somewhat unclear on the response to query #3..." Will Plus Pack allow me to transfer a full image of my Win XP files, programs and operating system to a new pc running a later version of Windows?"
You said..."No, the Plus Pack will allow you to port your XP system on to new hardware and install with the new motherboard drivers. "

Can you elaborate on this comment? How is the term port used and when you mention new hardware are you referring to a new hard drive in my current XP pc or are you referring to a new pc?

Sorry to be so obtuse but at age 81 I find learning curves much steeper than in the past.

Frank

Frank,

TI 2013 uses an activation system taking into account IDs fo your motherboard, your PC name and possibly other details and sends a code to Acronis. If you attempt to install a single copy on another computer it will inform you that you have 'too many activations' and will require you to deactivate one PC and activate the install on the new PC. So one copy per machine is required.

I am referring to a new PC or the original PC but with a new motherboard. Some people hope though, they can reformat their current hard drive and install a new OS onto their current PC and then recover their existing programs from an image, that is not possible using True Image and the Plus Pack or most other disk recovery software.

What the Plus Pack does is mainly to allow an existing system to be installed onto a new PC or a PC with a new motherboard. No Plus Pack is required if you just want to install a new hard drive and recover an image to that.

Colin, thanks for the simplified explanation. I now have a better understanding of 2013 and its features.
