All you require is Grub4DOS which is free, follow the instructions.
Grover's links require you to scroll up this page and click on Grover's True Image Guides, then select the tutorial written by Mudcrab (search for him on the forum) and you should be up and running.

I have a Patriot 64GB USB stick. I put the Windows PE3.0 environment version of the recovery disk on it. The Windows PE version is made from the installed version of ATIH and is the only reason way I had to install ATIH. Windows PE is a bootable subset of Windows 7. I actually like it better than the Linux based version.

I have installed a "running" version of true image home 2012. I have access to my usb sticks.
Now I installed build ATIH2012_6154_de-DE to fix some errors. I must delete the old version with the cleantool.
After installing i have access to my usb sticks.
After reboot i have no access to my usb sticks.
2 hours of work. This is a nice pc adventure again.
Greetings, Bernhard

I think I located the guide for using GRUB4DOS to set up a bootable USB... However, I would still like to know if anyone has experience with the "free" product that I referenced earlier (unetbootin)...
Also, based upon the latest post, is this problem finally FIXED in Buld 6515??

The latest build I see for my account is 6154. I do not see any new builds after that and I know USB issue is still in build 6154.

I suspect the problem is non-trivial to solve. Anyone try connecting a cell phone or mp3 player and see if it is the same result? It would be nice to know the issue is drive independant and more chipset related. I know that the AMD Hudson chipset uses a different USB controller then the Intel Sandy Bridge platform does.

Folks -- here is my experience using "unetbootin" (and I guess that I will have to try out UltraISO now...).
I had already downloaded the ISO of the Bootable Media from the Acronis site.
I downloaded the unetbootin from sourceforge... It is a pretty simple "exe" and when you start it up, you get a very simple interface...
You have tow choices:
a. choose a Linux Distribution / Version OR
b. select an ISO file.
I selected the ISO file. The only other thing that you specify is the target which (in my case) is USB Drive.
That's it and it fires off nicely. There is a progress bar showing that "Universal Netboot" is being installed and then you see that
it also "explodes" the ISO and copies in all of the files.....
Everything looked good... Then I tried to boot off of the USB. It *does* boot up into some version of Linux!
For some reason the Acronis Loader is not seen and the acronis stuff does not appear!
Then I compared my current bootable USB (for ATI 2011) with the files that had been copied to my just-built USB... I found that there were
MANY more files... In fact, all of the files that had been copied from the ISO file were in a folder called "recovery manager" and there were a WHOLE BUNCH of additional files, as well -- which were NOT on the USB that had been "built" using unetbootin....
I then tried something else... I copied all of the folders from my USB to a Temp Folder and then followed the instructions (in KB 1526 where it discusses "Creating Bootable Media on USB Flash Drive (applies to Windows Vista/7/...) I went to someone wiht Windows7 installed and reformatted the USB as well as assign a mount point.
Then, I used my existing copy of ATIH 2011 to "create bootable media" and THEN I over-write the Recovery Manager folder with the files that had been in my Temp Folder... [which had been copied off of the USB when I used unetbootin to "explode" the files onto the USB...
Now, THIS boots up -- however, the "splash screen states "Acronis TIH 2011" sos I do not know if this [kludgy] process even accomplished what I wanted to do -- which was to have a Bootable Media with ATIH 2012 on it!!
I suspect that [if I want to do this "for free"] that I will have to go the "GRUB4DOS" route....
Or, maybe buy UltraISO.....

However, my computer did not improve.

So, I went and tried GRUB4DOS ... and THAT worked beautifully... Allows me to jsut "dump in" the ISO file without being concerned about having to "re-expand" it... There was only one oddity... I used a PNY USB Flash Drive and the GRUB4DOS installer complained that the partition was "bad" and I would have to choose to skip something relating to testing the MBR... I did not want to do that so I went to a colleague with Windows 7 and did the "diskpart" exercise where I end up resettting a partition and reformatting [fully] the drive... Once I did THAT -- then GRUB4DOS no longer complained... so, I now have a "bootable recovery media to allow me to do disk cloning (and I think backup) without having to actually install the acronis product into Windows... This should work for me until the problem is actually FIXED!!!
[I understand that this must be a nasty problem but it seems that Acronis could have done more than they appear to be doing right now!!]

This note is too late if Grub4DOS has already been installed into your master boot record. For future reference, however, it isn't actually necessary. The Grub4DOS external grldr.mbr is easily chain loaded from a regular ntldr/boot.ini startup. And it can be used, in turn, to load anything from ISO files to Vista/Win7 bootmgr menus.

Richard --
I simply followed the instructions in the document (by Mudcrab -- may he be blessed!) on the use of GRUB4DOS. I have no indication that there as ANY sort of "loader" on my USB "Stick"... and this worked quite nicely....
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
No problem. Just noting that there are Grub4DOS options available for people who might otherwise shy away from modifying their master boot record. Whatever works for you is fine.

I also have real problems with my vaio notebook with win7 64 bit after upgrading to the latest acronis 2012 build 6154
I had already some problems with USB disks but since this upgrade (done by acronis techical people) the usb disks don't work at al!!
I have seen a lot of troubles that are similar and it is a real problem! My eventlog is full or errors like :
The driver \Driver\tdrpman273 failed to load for the device RISDPTSK\Disk&Ven_Ricoh&Prod_SD/MMCStorage&Rev_1.00\0001.
The driver \Driver\tdrpman273 failed to load for the device USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_V88&Prod_V88&Rev_5.00\1516140049B39D05&0.
The Acronis support desk was involved since i was not able to do a normal upgrade procedure. They removed the older acronis with some sort of dos toolkit and then reinstalled Acronis
Not using normal MSI deinstall procedures is something a really dislike, it trashes your registry. But it seems the fastest way to remove acronis.
Reinstalling was without any problems but i expect the usb driver sections of my pc are broke now!
I hope some sort of fixpack will be delivered i am really now into problems since i make backups of my data but not from my os and all utils ...

E. Graaff,
The entries you list appear to reference a card reader or similar, is this so? If it is and you are able to disable the card reader hardware, does the USB problem disappear?
Obviously this isn't a fix, but it would point to a driver clash.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
You know...
even if iti is a "Driver conflict" -- it seems that this is something that Acronis Support should be able to deal with at some level... rather than leaving people to flounder or [like me] simply NOT install the product right now.....

Hi Guys, i have also problems with my 16 gb usb drive. I even made a supportcall to Kingston and get a new drive back from them since the problem looked as if it was a hardware problem. We almost send the notebook for repair of the usb slots, and to buy a powered usb hub since we thought it was a power consumption issue...
When the new drive showed similar issues i started to dig deeper in the problem, examine the eventlogs and so on.
My conclusions at this moment:
- my 1, 2 and 4 gb usb drives work fine
- my 8 and 16 gb drives have problems and win7 suggest to reformat the drive .. !!!
When you start windows 7 in safe mode you will be surprised the usb drive works as expected fast and without problems!!
I did some tricks with driver signing as mentioned in the forum, result > BSOD ! have been able to solve this...and the pc is working again.
Also Kingston technical staff mentioned to me when we discussed this problem they have had similar problems with acronis 2011 as well as 2012.
I would really like to get a good and save and secure cookbook or patch to solve this issue. Not been able to use my usb stick is a real problem.
So :
-when i deinstall acronis will everything work as normal ? This could be for this time a problem solution
-can we expect a clear guidance by Acronis how to solve the problem ?
This bug/behavior can bring customers into real trouble when they are not technical experienced!

Eelco

Hi Colin,
The usb drives are directly connected to my usb port of the sony vaio.. please look to my other post.
Some extra info based on my eventlog:

Encrypted volume check: Volume information on E: cannot be read.
put it on another usb slot
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR11.
this usb drive works fine in win7 safe mode and on all other computers here ...
the usb disk is plug and played as DT 100 G2
The working usb disk is a V88 V88 1 gb disk

Hi E Graaff,
Yes, but do you have a card reader attached? True Image and card readers (along with external USB hubs) do have a history of upsetting each other and I'm just wondering if your particular USB problem is being caused by a card reader.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Hi E Graaff,
In relation to your question about uninstalling TIH 2012 and things returning to normal, from my own experience this was not the case for me, an uninstall did not return my USB drive functionality and subsequent use of the cleanup tool did not work either, in fact the only way I could get my USB drives working again was to reinstall TIH 2011 after the previously mentioned uninstall and cleanup, and you read that right, I had to reinstall the older 2011 version.
I am loathe to try and uninstall TIH 2011 now in case the USB problem manifests itself again and I cannot face a complete reinstall of Windows 7 at this point in time, even though I fear that is the only course of action which I will eventually have to take.
Colin B,
You say TIH has a history of problems with card readers and external hubs, again from my own experience, I was unable to use two USB hard drives and all of my USB flash drives if they were plugged into my card reader, the onboard motherboard USB ports, or the USB ports on a PCI expansion card.
It was obvious this was some sort of driver problem/conflict as all other non-storage devices, such as webcam, graphics tablet, printer and so on, continued to work without any problems. At one point I even contacted a member of the support staff who provided a link to an as yet unreleased patch for TIH 2012 and applied it, but alas my problem still existed so I had to uninstall and revert to 2011.

I am happy it is at least seen as a bug and a real irritating one, since i am not able to use my usb stick anymore on my notebook exept the 1gb stick. Why the 16 stick is causing troubles and the 1gb not puzzles me but good change it is logic when it has to do with drivers.
I have deinstalled acronis but i expect quite some residue in the registry and maybe in the windows system folders. What is the best way to complete really deinstall acronis and pluspack and all other acronis stuff from my system. And reinitialize the usb disk drivers?
I would like to get the usb drives working again.
I want also offer you my time and help for debugging and testing the issue on my system if you like. Feel free to make contact with me.

Other may chime in here but I would recommend reimaging your system prior to the ATIH install. If you can't, I would recommend just reinstalling Windows. Hopefully someone in Acronis can provide you a method to unistall their drivers or better yet a set that actualy works.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
You can use the cleanup utility. It removes everything that Acronis developers deemed safe to remove, but leaves some drivers. So hopefully this will resolved your drive issues.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Well if the cleanup util leaves some drivers there is a real change the problem stays.
What i have figured out and want so share with you:
When you boot windows in safe mode the usb stick works as expected, also the recognition is fast!
When you boot windows 7 64 the normal way, the usb stick is slow and when recognized windows suggests to format it since not readable.
This means windows in safe mode uses different usb drivers, and does work, but now .. hoe do i find out to get it working this way in a normal booted windows environment, than we are back in a operational situation.
Does someone at this moment having this problem really have a solution or a fix in place ? at this moment?
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
I want to share a possible other solution:
During the deinstallation and cleanup of acronis i saw in my devicemanager showing a driver with an ! and this puzzled me. It was a comondo backup virtual driver. Seems to me a left behind from an earlier installation.
I manualy deinstalled this driver and ... plugged the usb stick in my pc and it was recognised again.
The problem was caused by the
Virtual Disk Bus Enumerator
http://forums.comodo.com/general-discussion-off-topic-anything-and-ever…
So maybe it could help you ...

I tried all of the fixes and no help and as I do not use the nonstop backup feature of ATIH 2012, I have the stopped the "Acronis Nonstop Backup Service" and changed the startup type to manual rather than automatic. All my USB sticks and card readers work 100% until a fix is provided.

My Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system has been unable to access any USB attached flash or hard drive since the first of multiple attempts to install & uninstall the 2012 ATIH & Plus upgrade packages. I opened a problem in September 2011. They finally admitted that their software caused the damage four months later. Ignoring my repeated pleas for help to restore my system to working order, they refunded my money for the upgrade.
I can't even access the backup files (all on USB-attached hard drives) created by the previous versions of their software. Of course, they don't seem anxious to refund my purchase price for those unusable versions either. Previous problem record comments say they are working on the problem they caused but don't have a target for resolution.
Clearly they aren't putting much priority effort in fixing their problem. They don't seem to understand that the money isn't the issue - it's the damage Acronis has caused and the priority need provide a fix.
I am thankful that I test the software on my equipment before advising my customers to install anything.
Does anyone on this forum have any ideas how to get Acronis development to fix their problem?
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Just got an update to my problem. Acronis is now saying this problem is a Windows problem. Their chat support says I should contact Microsoft. Help! Does anyone trust their developers enough to install their software on any system?

If you have a good backup before ATIH2012 was installed then I recommend using the bootable CD to restore. The bootable CD should be able to see your USB devices, because installing ATIH2012 does not affect the bootable media. If you have newer data you want to keep you have to copy that to a safe place first.
If you want to get the USB drives working again before restoring the image or if you do not have a backup from the time before ATIH2012 was installed, I think you have to:
- Uninstall ATIH2012
- Run the cleanup utilitiy, see http://kb.acronis.com/content/24545
Use the latest cleanup utility, is looks like it should remove even the references to the left-over drivers what were previously left behind. This is at least what I read from the description. I haven't tried this myself, use at your own risk! I restored my PC from a backup I made before installing ATIH2012 and I really do not want to risk installing ATIH2012 again until there is a new build and feedback reports on the forum turn positive. There is no sign of any of that yet, so I continue to use ATIH2010, my previous version and wait.

Anton,
Thank you for your attention. At your suggestion, I re-downloaded and re-installed the two fixes in snapapi_virtualdisk.zip and rebooted. I was hoping that they were updates from the previous versions that I had already applied. Whether or not they were newer fixes, it still did nothing to fix the problem. The device manager, as it has since the beginning of this problem, shows the following under Disk Drives:
- Disk drive
- Patriot Memory USB Device
- WDC WD20 EADS-65RB1 USB Device
- WDC WD5000BEKT-60KA9T0
The first three show an "!" and the properties display the following message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
They are identified as located on a USB Mass Storage Device.
The fourth entry is for the standard internal hard drive and shows no error.
Acronis management needs to be aware of what is happening to some of their most loyal customers. I am sure that if I reinstalled Windows 7, the problem would be fixed. All traces of the Acronis disaster woiuld have been removed. However, all of the data and programs installed on my system would be gone also. That is unacceptable.
Acronis was purchased to provide backup of my system. But the 2012 upgrade has destroyed that capability no matter what backup software I use. It is much more that a mere inconvenience. Are you aware of some reason that Acronis development and support is refusing to put an appropriate priority on providing a fix for each system that they have ruined?
Again, thank you for your attention.

Bob,
If Windows Device Manager is now showing exclamation or question marks against devices, then it is possible that Windows itself is confused. If you uninstall 2012 does Device Manager find those devices correctly?
Have you tried running Windows system file checker (sfc /SCANNOW) from a command prompt?

Aconis is in question are known, this FIX.
I was hoping for three months.
Are you still, if you are unable to resolve, please try the following.
To create a "system restore point".
1.2012 uninstall.
2.2012 cleentool.
3.2009 install.
4.2010 install.
5.2012 install.
Previous versions, it may be even better 2011.
I, in this step, code = 39 is resolved, and was resolved usb.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
This sounds great!
But I don't have 2009 and 2010.
Can Acronis prepare a repairtool including this steps?
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Japan Support Center also solve the 'clean tool' and 'snapapi_virtualdisk.zip' and was saying, did not resolve.
They said a special case.
They are requesting to resolve computer information.
But the HDD for more information and personal information collected from the tool, turned down the offer.
They said the unresolved turned down the request.
They have demanded the following.
-Return to original from backups in the past.
-Return from using the system past restore points.
-Please reinstall the OS.
However, to install the ATIH2012 and notice trouble this time had passed.
"OS reinstall!", a huge time consuming.
No ATIH is in such trouble?
Until then, I was using ATIH2009 and ATIH2010.
I have run that step to try.
My computer is ATIH2012 properly, 'code = 39' and the USB problem is resolved.
I reported this to Japan support center.
They request from me is 'fix you'.
What of discontinuing it, saying they are to close this issue.
I looked for this forum.
Did you know that same trouble that others also.
I've reported this Forum Japan support center.
They said this forum, and publicized to your enterprise.
Then, in this forum, I got taught English version ATIH2012 update.
However, according to update information, this trouble is not resolved.
Moreover, Japan language version has not been released yet.
Acronis is not completely uninstall also currently installed programs.
Acronis I seriously want my recovery steps.
Otherwise, it soon, I want to create a complete uninstall program.

This should be brought forward again since there are a bunch of new threads about USB problems (card readers, etc) and it has been three months since the last patch when this issue was not addressed.

I agree this problem still hasn't been solved. I have tried several of the suggested 'solutions' but none have worked. Surprisingly Roman no longer replies to this thread with an official solution. So I continue to have a problem, with no sanctioned solution....a very sad example of customer service.

Anton,
Thanks for the update we look forward to hopefully finally getting a version that works. Would it not have been an idea to have contacted some of us on this thread to try this version prior to release for testing so that it doesn't become another failure? As far as the 'workaround', it doesn't work for many of us with the USB issue, hence the greater frustration.

John7,
What or which two extra programs?
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Hi, they are Virtual Disk Driver and SnapAPI installed via snapap. They remained installed the last time I updated (the USB issue wasn't sorted with that version). Though I have asked in pm and on the forum no one from Acronis has ever replied on if they should be removed before an update. Given the poor record of the problems created with their products I don't what to risk creating problems by jumping the wrong way!
