Why is Acronis creating an image in response to my request to create a backup?

It is my (possibly incorrect) understanding that an image is not a straight file backup where files can be read directly from the backup. Is that correct?

I thought cloning requires an image and files on an image are not readily readable individually as they are on a typical standard backup.

A disk/partition image backup is a TIB file that contains all the information and data necessary to restore the disk/partitions.
A file backup is another type of TIB file that contains the information to restore a collection of files.
You can double click on a TIB to open it with Windows Explorer.

Cloning is a different operation where you create an exact copy of a disk. The result is a disk (not a TIB file).

When you restore a disk/partition image backup, you restore an entire partition most of the time, and the target partition is erased before recovery.
When you restore a file backup, you restore individual files/folders.

Don't know if it is so in WD edition, but in standard TrueImage you can also restore individual files from a disk/partition backup.

I cloned for backup purposes. At least I wanted to, and I think I did. The resulting file, seemingly contradictory to what I expected from your explanation, is a TIB file. Did I miss something?

If you used the clone function, you cannot get a TIB file. If you use the image (disk an partition) backup function (that many users call cloning), you get a TIB file. Might look like semantics, but there is a major difference in the application.
