Problem with Windows Server 2008 R2 Disk Recovery
Hi,
I tested Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 for Windows Server 2008 R2, because we will use Server 2008 in future. I did not expect any problems, but ... I will describe what Version I am using, what I wanted to do, what I did and what happened ...
The Acronis Version I am using:
Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Update 3
Bootable Agent Build 10.0.12497
What I wanted to do:
I wanted to make a complete disk archive and recover this archive (both with this bootable agent, to and from an USB HDD) in order to test the functions of this Acronis Version.
What I did, step by step:
I booted to the bootable agent and started the management console.
I clicked on backup and switched to the advanced view.
I changed the item to backup to complete disk 1. (Disk 2 was the USB HDD)
Exclusions were not specified.
I changed the path of the archive to a directory on the USB HDD, checked "Name backup files using the archive name, as in Acronis True Image Echo, rather than auto-generated names" and addes some archive comments.
Backup scheme was back up now and type was setted to full.
I did not validate the archive and started the back up.
So far so good.
I booted to windows and then back to the bootable agent to start the recovery.
First I deleted all volumes with the disk management. Then I started the Recovery with this settings:
Recover 'Disk 1' to: Disk 1
NT signature: Recover from backup
Recover: Now
Settings: Default
First time Windows started normally and I was happy until I booted a second time.
After the log in screen there was a APPCRASH of the Windows-Explorer explorer.exe
By the second recover try I changed the NT settings to: create new
Now Windows showed me a failure in the netjoin.dll and some programs failed to start.
I tried to recover the Volumes, rather than the complete disk, but explorer.exe crashed now again.
The last try was to use the disk image and validate the archive.
I deleted the volumes on Disk 1 and validated the archive.
I started the Disk recover (NT recover from backup and check file system activated).
I saved system infos after the back up and shut down the PC.
I disconnected the USB HDD and started Windows.
Now something unexpected happened. Windows said, thar drive D: hast to be checked and scandisk started. After a automatic reboot windows is working, also after a second and third reboot.
Now I am a bit confused and I have no confidence in this Acronis Version when using it with Windows Server 2008 R2.
I will try to recover the system with the same steps, in order to see how the system reacts. Perhaps the last try was just luck.
Did I do anything wrong in the first tries recovering the system?
Can someone explain the different reactions of Windows Server 2008 to me?
How can I check, that the Windows Version I recovered is really working to 100% (or 99,999999%)?

Hi Yana,
I made the same steps and investigated the functions of windows further. When I work on the machine everything is fine, but by remote log in there was an APPCRASH of the explorer.exe again. Now Windows is screwed up again.
I will provide you with the needed Info asap.
Thank You.

here are the System Info Output files I made with the Bootable Agent.
"TSPC102_20101230_after_failure_SysinfoOutput.tar.bz2" is the one I made directly after recover
"TSPC102_20101230_after_recovery_SysinfoOutput.tar.bz2" is the one I made after Windows crashed
Since I have no access to windows anymore, I cannot provide further information.
I could start another recover and try to collect information with AcronisInfo and AcronisReport, if you need it.
There was another strange thing I recognized. The Windows Server 2008 Version installed was german (because I am german..) and I installed a language pack to have it "international" in english. Now there is a micture of both languages by logging in and out.
some further information:
The Windows Version (2008 R2 Enterprise) was not activated, since it was only installed for testing Acronis and some other things.
The PC is using a RAID 1 with two SSD drives. The Raid Controller is from Areca, type ARC-1210.
