BSOD When Formatting Large USB 3 Thumb Drives!

Thread needs solution

I have been getting BSOD since installing ATIH 2012 whenever I attempt to format any of my Kingston USB 3 thumb drives. Within a few seconds after initiating such a format operation (NTFS, fast format), I get a BSOD in module vsflt58.sys, Acronis' “virtual disk storage filter.” This problem did not occur with ATIH 2011.

Any comment from Acronis? Any fixes available other than to totally uninstall ATIH 2012?

Hello Dov,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

The issue needs a closer investigation.
1) Could you please let us know the program you have used to format the flash drive?
2) Could you please provide us with Kereal memory dumps?
Please do the following in order to enable Kernel memory dumps:
- Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties";
- Go to "Advanced" tab;
- Go to "Startup" and "Recover Settings";
- Choose "Kernel memory dump" in "Write debugging information" box;
- Close all the dialog windows by clicking OK buttons.
Now, please reproduce the system crash and send us the dump files created. This will allow us to investigate the problem thoroughly.
3) Please obtain Acronis system report (Help -> generate system report)
I am sending a link to upload the files via PMs.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

Hi Oleg,

The “program” used to format the flash drive was the standard Windows device formatting capability accessed by right-clicking on the device from My Computer and selecting Format.

Since this will actually require me to force the BSOD on a production system, it may take me a day or two before I can get these materials to you.

Oleg,

All three files have been successfully uploaded to the FTP site including the 154Kbyte mini-dump, the 415Mbyte kernel dump, and the AcronisSystemReport.zip file. Please let me know if there is anything else you want me to send. (It is unfortunately exceptionally difficult to send a screen grab of a BSOD!)

In this particular case, I reproduced the problem under Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, although I the exact same problem occurs with both Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on all my other systems. The systems on which this doesn't occur is on systems on which I don't have Acronis True Image Home 2012 installed! Note that the problem doesn't seem to occur with some smaller USB thumb drives, but it is 100% reproducible with this particular Kingston DT Ultimate 16GB drive on the systems with Acronis True Image Home 2012.

I will be monitoring my e-mail for any progress you make in attempting to find the source of the problem and fix it (other than uninstalling the Acronis software, obviously)!

Thanks.
