A little confused - Looking for guidance

Thread needs solution

I have an XP-Pro system running Raid-1 on a couple of 160gb drives. Unfortunately my motherboard, I believe, has a problem (possible cracked etch). It's currently running but has the POTENTIAL of crashing at any time. I'm building a new system to replace it. I'm trying to avoid doing a complete install of Windows because the version I have is pre-ServicePk1 and I'd have to do all of the updates and reload all of my programs again - PITA
HERE'S MY CONFUSION - The chipsets are different between my old MB and the new one.
How should I save off my old HD data?
Should I do away with (stop) my Raid-1 before I do the Save?
What is the best way to save ALL (including the OS) of my data, that would make a restore easiest and less likely to encounter problems? Remember the chipsets are vastly different. (going from Nvidia 610i to Z78)
I've created a Bootable Acronis CD but that's as far as I've gotten so far.
I have the PLUS-PACK and from my interpretation of what I've read this is a doable procedure, but I'm not comfortable that I completely understand how it's done. If anyone can help me, using simple terms, I would really welcome your input. Thanks!

You will need the drivers of your new motherboard (disk controller) in their INF format (not ZIP and not EXE). Store them on an external USB disk that you will use also to store your backup. Pick the disk controller for the SATA/RAID mode that you will use on your new motherboard.

If you didn't do it, make sure your ACronis recovery CD has been created after you have installed the Plus Pack.

Leave the RAID as it is.

Boot your computer on the Acronis recovery CD, make sure that the CD sees only one volume. If it sees 2 separate disks for the RAID, see note below. Do a disk and partition backup of the entire system disk to the external USB disk.

Set up the BIOS of your new motherboard to the SATA/RAID mode you want and have the drivers for. Create the RAID if this is the choice.

Boot your new motherboard on the Acronis recovery CD. If this is a RAID setting, make sure the CD sees only one volume. If it sees 2, this won't work (see note below). Choose restore whole disk and partitions, activate UR and point ATI at the folder where you stored the drivers when requested.

Note: if the CD doesn't the RAID as one volume, you have to create a WINPE-based recovery CD. Follow the help file to do that. Note that if your motherboard is very recent, it is possible that the disk controller drivers are not included in the Windows toolkit. Then it becomes a tad more complicated to insert the drivers in the Wind-PE image.
