ATI 2018 Automatic Cleanup . . . isn't Automatic?

Thread needs solution

Installed 2018 over 2016 under which the last backup had failed due to a full disk. The disk contained 5 (incremental) backup chains dating back a year or so. The instructions that I found for removing unwanted chains said do not manually delete them, either use the Management Console or choose automatic cleanup and make appropriate settings. I chose the latter (first time this option was chosen), setting the number of chains to keep to 3. The instructions say cleanuo can only be initiated by starting a backup. So I did.

No cleanup was performed. The backup failed.

I restarted windows, restarted 2018, the automatic cleanup option was correctly set to 3, but for a second try I changed it to 2 chains. Same result . . . no cleanup, backup failed.

I looked for a Management Console. No such tool. Apparently that info is for version 11.5.

Any idea how to actually do a cleanup?

Neil, welcome to these User Forums.

Automatic cleanup can only work when a new full backup (for a new version chain) has been created, so if you don't have the space available for such a backup it will always fail.

In this instance you will need to manually delete some older backup version chain files via Windows Explorer, then do a Validation for the backup task that created those files so that this will reconcile the Acronis Database information about the backup files.

Once you have sufficient free space, then automatic cleanup will work but remember that it works only on completed version chains, i.e. if you set to store no more than 2 chains, then you need space to hold those 2 chains plus a further full backup file for the next chain being created.

One further point, please avoid making changes to the Backup Scheme settings, including this count of how many version chains to store etc, as this can result in the count being reset and more than the number of chains set being kept.
