backup/restore with BartPE TrueImage & Truecrypt...

Thread needs solution

Hi there,

I've been using BartPE built with TrueImage 11 library for a long time to backup, restore and resize whole partitions to NAS storage via Gigabit ethernet.  It works great - a nearly ideal solution for me, until I tried it with a TrueCrypt volume... now I get "Error: no bootable partition found".

I was able to backup a TrueCrypt 6.2 encrypted volume with BartPE/TrueImage 11 successfully to NAS storage (well, it verified OK at least).  I was also able to do sector-by-sectore restore of the MBR & encrypted volume (with BartPE/TrueImage11) to the same physical drive in the same physical system. Acronis s/w said operation was completed successfully.

BUT after TrueCrypt prompts and appears to accept the decrypt password, I cannot boot successfully... TrueCrypt now reports "Error: No bootable partition found".

The physical disk was repartitioned, reimaged & then unpartitioned since it last worked. I wonder if the partition table on the destination drive needs to be exactly as it was before?

Unfortunately I only backed up the main NTFS Windows partition (but not the Lenovo recovery partition that was also on the disk)... I had intended to blow the recovery partition away later. I understand that I can't resize an encrypted partition without first unencrypting (so TrueImage restore can see & resize the file system, etc).

But now I'd sure be happy to be able to get my image to work again.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

Rob

ps: key learning so far -

  1. back up the whole disk, not just the encrypted volume,
  2. know that encrypted image can only be restored to drive with same heads/sectors/size (?), and
  3. try a full restore and boot up to make sure backup/restore of an encrypted volume works "end to end" before you have to depend on it...

Hello Robert,

First of all please make sure that you are using the latest build of the program. Check it in Help -> About. You can always download the latest build of the program from your account under Registered Products.

I understand the issue you experience and do my best to solve it. There are several possible ways to proceed. To solve "Error: no bootable partition found" error you should also include it into the image, if the issue persists you should repair MBR. You can use the following method to accomplish this. Please download special Acronis utility from http://download.acronis.com/support/mbrautowrite_en.exe. Use it to create a floppy and boot the machine from the floppy.

If you prefer to a fix MBR using a CD, then please download special Acronis utility from http://download.acronis.com/support/mbrautowrite_en.iso. Use it to create a CD and boot the machine from the CD.

The MBR will be rewritten once you boot the computer from the created media and confirm that you want to fix the MBR.

Please also note that Acronis True Image can always create a raw (sector-by-sector) backup of an encrypted partition when booted from Acronis Bootable Rescue Media.

If the encryption key is based on the hard drive or some hardware serial numbers, a sector-by-sector copy may not work as expected. The best solution will then be to create the backup in Windows. Then, when restoring it, do it as you would do it normally. The only difference is that after the restore you will need to rebuild the MBR using Acronis ISO image above.
