Destroyed original boot in Vista & could't boot new drive -Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thread needs solution

I actually purchased a legitimate copy of True Image Home 2009 from a local computer store (Fry's). Installed a 1tb Hitachi into my Gateway with a 400gb western digital. It did it's thing for about 45 min and when it completed, I removed the 400gb and had only the 1tb remaining. Tried to boot off the new drive and hung up, never booted.

I re-installed the old SATA 400gb and it couldn't boot either (worked prefect before). It automatically went into Vista boot repair and it couldn't fix it either. Eventually I was forced to use the recovery option, which worked, and now it's back to normal.

I looked at the new 1tb drive after installing it as a D: drive, and all files seemed to be there as the original drive has, but still cannot boot.

I'm afraid of re-trying the imaging again, fearing that it may not recover the second time.

Why isn't the new 1tb drive able to boot?

I'll try to help.

First off, I assume you did a "clone" which would create an exact duplicate of your 400 GB drive, not an "image" which is stored data via sector level method.

I believe you should do the following for a successful clone.

1. Create a bootable TI rescue cd. Make sure you can boot from it and that it can see both hard drives.

2. Install the new 1tb drive while the 400 gb drive is still installed as the booting drive.

3. Boot from that rescue cd.

4. Using the booted CD (not windows), do your clone from 400 gb to 1 tb. Don't let the Linux boot confuse you as to which drive is which, drive letters can change when booted to the cd.

5. When cloning is complete, shut down, don't attempt a re-boot yet, remove the 400 gb drive, put the 1tb drive where the 400 gb drive had been connected to your motherboard. Be sure the boot cd is removed. Now you can power on and boot from the 1tb drive.

6. You should now have a successful boot to the 1tb drive. Now you can power off and also install the old 400 gb drive if you want to.
